For 4 months the iconic Australian animal – the kangaroo has eluded me and I have yet to see one of these marsupials in the wild.

However, Queensland has many other incredible wildlife experiences.

Aussie Animal Highlights

The beauty and serenity of the underwater world of the Great Barrier Reef

1) Discovering a whole new underwater world of coral gardens, bright, extravagant fish and hopefully a turtle or reef shark at the worlds largest living organism on the Great Barrier Reef

Witnessing the annual migration of humpback whales in Hervey Bay

2) Watching acrobatic and magnificent gentle giants of the sea as the humpback whales teach their young calves a trick or too to break up their long annual migration in the shallow waters of Hervey Bay.

Crocodiles in the Daintree River

3) The delight and terror of spotting huge crocodiles basking in the sun and in the murky waters on the Daintree River

4) Catching a glimpse of the shy, unique monotreme the platypus with the distinctive duck like bill as it dives for food and resurfaces, paddling around on Broken River in Eungella National Park. See In Pursuit of Platypus

Cuddly koalas on Magnetic Island

5) Spotting the grey, furry koalas as they doze in the eucalyptus trees on Magentic Island and then giving one a cuddle in a wildlife sanctuary.
