Where to Stay in Lloret de Mar? – A Hostal Ribas Review

Welcome to the Costa Brava!

The rugged coast of Costa Brava is one of the most beautiful in Spain and the coastal towns nestled between beautiful old Girona and cultured and cosmopolitan Barcelona are in a perfect position if you want to combine a these cultured cities with a beach holiday in Northern Spain.

My Review of Hostal Ribas, Lloret de Mar

I recently attended TBEX, a travel blogger conference, held in Lloret de Mar and enjoyed a fantastic stay at Hostal Ribas.

Let me begin by saying that Hostal Ribas really exceeded my expectations – firstly,  it’s not really a hostel at all, there are no dormitory rooms. I learned that in Spain a ‘Hostal’ means a welcoming, budget orientated accommodation rather than backpacker dorms.

The Rooms

The 21 private rooms in this family run hotel have recently been refurbished and are very stylish, modern and comfortable. The rooms are light and spacious with a modern integrated bathroom and equipped with everything you need – even a hair dryer and cute toiletries sachets, which was a huge plus for me.

The rooms also have air conditioning, safety deposit box, toiletries, free wifi and a flat screen TV (although I didn’t have time to watch it!) Breakfast is available at the family run Bodega Can Garet restaurant for 5 euros and in the evening this a great place to enjoy drinks and tapas with a friendly atmosphere from locals, guests and staff.

The Owners

Lloret de Mar is not exactly known for family run businesses so I was delighted to have the pleasure of meeting the lovely family owners of Hostal Ribas, a refreshing and a rare thing to find here now.

From sitting down and chatting with Miquel Ribas (over the most amazing sangria and mouth watering Spanish ham!) it was clear to see that the passion for hospitality has been handed down through the 3 generations of this family who started Hostal Ribas ( In 1962 when Lloret was still just a quiet fishing town and tourism on the Costa Brava was just beginning ) is still going strong.

3 years ago Miquel handed the reins over to his children –Jordi and Cristina who took the lead in the recent renovations to update the hotel to appeal to the new guests and the younger generation and in my opinion they did a great job and so this family run hotel continues to thrive.

On hearing my plans to visit Rome,  Miquel, who is also a botanist, even gave me a copy of his book ‘The Plants of the Trevi Fountain.’ Just from spending a few days here I could feel that at Hostal Ribas guests are not purely regarded as tourists but as friends too.

The Location

As well as the comfortable rooms and family run hospitality, one of Hostal Ribas’s biggest selling points is also the location, just 2 minutes from Lloret de Mar beach, nestled in the back streets close to shops and restaurants.

The main area of Lloret de Mar’s busy nightlife is about 10 minutes walk away which was perfect for me because it meant I did not have far to walk to enjoy the parties but when I wanted to rest I could sleep soundly in a nice, quiet room while other bloggers complained about noise from the nightclubs keeping them awake on the other side of the town.

Lloret also makes a great base from which to explore the Costa Brava region; Barcelona is naturally a must see, but those who also make the time to explore beautiful, historic Girona, the smaller turquoise bays and rugged coastal settlements and the Pyrenees are rewarded.

The Value for Money

Hostal Ribas makes a central, comfortable and welcoming base from which to explore Costa Brava, and with rates for a double room starting at only 38 Euros it’s very affordable too.

Overall, I would highly recommend Hostal Ribas for it’s great location in Lloret de Mar, the modern, comfortable and stylish rooms, lovely hosts and its great value for money. Don’t miss this family run gem when in Lloret.

To check out Hostal Ribas for yourself email: [email protected] or call: +34 972 36 40 10 or visit the website: http://www.hostalribas.com plus if you book online you also get a welcome drink at Can Garet, 20% off all food and drinks at Can Garet, and a 30% discount on parking.

By the way, I was kindly hosted by Hostal Ribas but all views and opinions are my own.
