Tips for Planning your Trip to Goa

Goa Cola Beach

The Best Beaches in Goa

Even though Goa is India’s smallest state its still worth doing some research into the different areas and beaches in Goa because each area and beach has a different vibe and appeals to different types of people. Once you get to know Goa then you can choose a beach resort in the best area for you.

North Goa

Generally speaking, North Goa is the busiest area to stay in Goa where all the action is including the best restaurants, nightlife, shopping and main tourist attractions. Popular beaches in North Goa to stay include Baga beach, Calangute beach, Candolim beach, Anjuna beach, Vagator beach, Morjim beach, Ashvem beach and Arambol beach

South Goa

South Goa is quieter and less developed with long, uncrowded beaches, luxury resorts and yoga retreats. I’ts the best place to stay in Goa if you are looking for peace and relaxation. Popular beaches in South Goa to stay on include Majorda beach, Colva beach, Cavelossim beach, Agonda beach and Palolem beach.

Panaji City (Panjim)

Central Goa & Panaji( Panjim) is a good base for culture, history and nature lovers. Goa’s capital has a colourful, old Latin quarter and beautiful Portuguese churches and Hindu temples. Miramar beach and Caranzalem Beach are the biggest beaches near Panjim. Dona Paula beach and Vainguinim beach are also good places to stay near the capital.

Staying in Panjim also offers easy access to the UNESCO churches of Old Goa and the temples, spice plantations, waterfalls and wildlife sanctuaries in the Ponda area.

Check out the Goa map below so you know where all these places are and read my article about where to stay in Goa for more.

When to Visit Goa & How Long to Stay

To have enough time to soak up the relaxed ‘susegad Goa vibes and check out the main beaches, parties and attractions I’d recommend visiting Goa for at least 3 days, however if you have more time you could easily spend 1 or 2 weeks enjoying Goa.

Generally, the best time to visit Goa is between December – March when the weather is sunny, dry and relatively cool. This is the peak tourist season so everything’s open, the beaches are at their best and the parties and markets are buzzing.

Visiting Goa during the monsoon season from June – October is a totally different and quieter experience as Goa turns lush and green. The heavy rain and rough seas mean this isn’t the best time for a sunny beach vacation so many places close down off season and crowds and prices fall.

Cost of Beach Resorts in Goa

While Goa is more expensive than most other places in India but still remains a very affordable destination from an international perspective.

In peak season in 2023/2024 (December – March) expect to pay:

  • 20,000 INR ( about $240 or £190 ) per night or more for a top 5 star luxury resort.
  • 10,000 INR ( about $120 or £95 ) will get you a really good mid range resort with all amenities.
  • There are also some good budget beach resort options under 5,000 INR (about $60 or £47)

As the cost depends on your dates among other factors click on the links provided to get the price for your dates. Be aware that tax/GST is not included and will require an additional payment once you reach the hotel. Also, some budget hotels require you to pay via bank transfer before arrival and don’t have facilities to take card payments.

If you’re visiting Goa during the Christmas and New Year period, over a national holiday weekend or during Carnival then it’s essential to book your stay online in advance because all the accommodation, especially the good beach resorts, gets fully booked up during the busiest periods.

Also expect to pay more to stay during these popular periods. As rates depending on the season and demand, if you have a smaller budget consider visiting outside of the peak season ( December – March) or national holiday periods as you’ll probably enjoy a lower room rate and less crowds.

Tips for Choosing a Resort in Goa

So know you know a bit more about the best beaches in Goa and when to visit you’re ready to book your stay. I’ll recommend my handpicked tried and tested best beach resorts in Goa, but first here’s a few more things to be aware of when choosing Goa beach resort.

While there are hundred’s of beach resorts on online booking sites like Booking.com, they are not all accurately described. Some hotels in Goa can be very disappointing so always read recent reviews before booking.

Be aware that some Goa resorts may claim to be on the beachfront but actually aren’t so check the location on a satellite map to make sure. Also, as Goa’s beaches are public spaces, technically there are no beach resorts in Goa private beaches.

Some resorts claim that they have a private beach, while they often have a private area on the beach in front of the resort they cannot stop people from accessing the public beach – just so you know.

If privacy and solitude are what you are after head to South Goa where you can find beachfront resorts on secluded stretches of sand with hardly anyone else around that feels just a good as a private beach.
